BREAKING: 4 dead, 9 injured in GA high school shooting, suspect in custody

An active shooter situation at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, has left four people dead and at least nine others wounded, according to sources cited by WSB-TV.

A source informed CNN that Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital has received two victims from the shooting: one adult with a gunshot wound to the stomach who is undergoing surgery, and a minor with unspecified injuries.

The incident began around 10:20 a.m. when first responders were dispatched to the high school following reports of an active shooter. Authorities have one suspect in custody. At least six ambulances were on the scene, and first responders were seen loading multiple victims, as reported by WSB-TV. Several individuals are being treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.

Apalachee High School has since been cleared for dismissal, but other schools in the Barrow County School District were placed on a “soft lockdown” as a safety measure.

“The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office says this is for the safety of everyone right now. Please do not visit your child’s school at this time. We cannot release students during a lockdown,” the school district said in a statement. “We will let you know as soon as BCSO says it is all clear for dismissal.”

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp addressed the situation, stating that he is “praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.” He also confirmed that he has directed “all available state resources to respond” to the incident.
