A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening at 6:23 p.m. ET, near the Cayman Islands.
Following the quake, a tsunami advisory was issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred approximately 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, about halfway between the islands and Honduras.
If tsunami waves are generated, forecasts predict they could reach Puerto Rico’s western coast by 8:48 p.m. ET (9:48 p.m. local time), with the Virgin Islands expected to be impacted about 30 minutes later.
