President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to impose steep tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing concerns over illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and insufficient action by these countries to curb these issues.
The announcement, made via Truth Social posts on Monday, includes a 25% tariff on all goods entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico, as well as an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
In his post, Trump linked the tariffs to a broader strategy for addressing what he described as crises at the borders and the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. “As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote.
He specifically referenced a “Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people,” which he claimed was unstoppable under the current border policies.
The president-elect pledged to take immediate action upon assuming office, declaring:
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.
This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”
In a separate statement, Trump announced the additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports, citing frustration over China’s failure to enforce harsh penalties against drug traffickers.
He criticized Beijing for reneging on previous commitments to address the issue, claiming that Chinese-produced drugs like fentanyl were entering the U.S. through Mexico in record quantities.
“I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail,” Trump said. He accused Chinese officials of failing to implement the death penalty for drug traffickers, as they had previously promised.
He continued:
“Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
The proposed tariffs signal a return to Trump’s hardline economic and border policies, which defined much of his first term. However, implementing such tariffs may face significant legal and logistical hurdles.
According to CNBC’s Washington correspondent Megan Cassella, Trump would likely need to declare an economic emergency to enact the tariffs on his first day in office. Such a move would almost certainly provoke legal challenges, potentially delaying their implementation.
The announcements underscore Trump’s commitment to his campaign promises of stronger borders and a tougher stance on international trade, setting the tone for his incoming administration.
