President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had reached an agreement with Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to halt the movement of migrant caravans and curb human trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border.
The development marks a significant step in Trump’s efforts to address illegal immigration and the drug crisis as he prepares to take office in January.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump stated. “She has agreed to stop migration through Mexico and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.
We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!”
Trump added that the measures would take effect immediately. “Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”
The announcement follows Trump’s recent threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on both Mexico and Canada if they did not take significant action to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking, as reported by Resist Times.
Sheinbaum responded promptly, unveiling plans to prevent illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border and expressing her willingness to collaborate with the incoming administration.
During Trump’s first term, his administration implemented strict asylum policies, including requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while awaiting their court dates and mandating that migrants apply for asylum in the first safe country they entered.
These policies were reversed by President Joe Biden, allowing asylum seekers to wait in the U.S., often at taxpayer expense, with court dates scheduled years in the future.
Sheinbaum acknowledged the challenges posed by these policies, pointing out that many migrants arriving at the U.S. border had appointments made through the CBP One app, a program established under the Biden-Harris administration.
“Maybe President Trump doesn’t know this, but of those arriving at the border—which is significantly fewer, 75 percent less than in December 2023—half of them have a CBP One appointment,” Sheinbaum said. “In other words, they are being invited to come to the United States.”
In addition to immigration, Trump emphasized his commitment to tackling the fentanyl epidemic, which has devastated communities across the country.
“I will be working on a large-scale United States advertising campaign, explaining how bad fentanyl is for people to use—millions of lives being so needlessly destroyed,” Trump said. “By the time the campaign is over, everyone will know how really bad the horror of this drug is.”
Trump’s election has already had a noticeable impact, with reports of migrant caravans forming in a rush to cross the border before his inauguration.
The agreement with Sheinbaum signals a shift in Mexico’s approach, with plans to prevent these caravans from reaching the U.S.
Sheinbaum’s cooperation underscores the changing dynamics of U.S.-Mexico relations as the Trump administration prepares to implement stricter immigration controls and tackle the drug crisis head-on.
