A Guatemalan migrant was arrested on Sunday for allegedly setting a sleeping woman on fire on a New York subway train, leading to her death.

The horrifying incident occurred at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station around 7:30 a.m. The woman was asleep when the suspect allegedly set her clothing ablaze, causing fatal injuries.

Authorities apprehended the suspect after a member of the public identified him on a train at 34th Street in Manhattan. Michael Kemper, the chief of security for the city’s transportation authority, confirmed during a Sunday news conference that a “person of interest is in custody.”

“There must be strong, swift consequences for this person,” Kemper said. “There is no room in civilized society for people like him to be walking around.”

The suspect has not yet been formally charged with a crime.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the suspect’s actions as chillingly deliberate.

“The man calmly walked up to the victim and used what we believe to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing,” Tisch said.

Shocking footage of the incident, widely shared on social media, shows the suspect setting the sleeping woman on fire and watching as the flames consumed her.

Investigators declared the woman deceased at the scene. Her body was found surrounded by liquor bottles, though it is unclear if they played a role in the incident.

The migrant, believed to have crossed the U.S. border in 2018, may have entered the country illegally, though this has not been confirmed.

The victim has not yet been formally identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities removed her body from the scene in a body bag, marking a tragic end to a horrifying act of violence.

This incident has further fueled debates about public safety and immigration, with calls for stronger consequences for violent offenders.
