Trump proposes selling federal properties, including DOJ and FBI HQ’s: A new report from Bloomberg reveals that the Trump administration is preparing to sell off 443 federal properties across 47 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
These properties include major government buildings, such as the headquarters of the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and even the General Services Administration (GSA) itself.
The GSA, which oversees federal real estate, has identified these properties as “non-core” assets, meaning they are not essential to government operations.
The agency stated that selling these properties will save taxpayers money by eliminating wasteful spending on unused or underutilized buildings.
“We are identifying buildings and facilities that are not core to government operations, or non-core properties for disposal,” the GSA explained on its website. “Selling ensures that taxpayer dollars are no longer spent on vacant or underutilized federal spaces.”
By shedding these properties, the government expects to eliminate costly maintenance expenses and reinvest in more efficient work environments that better serve agency missions.
In total, the 443 properties cover nearly 80 million rentable square feet—roughly equivalent to twelve times the size of the Pentagon.
The estimated savings from selling these properties exceed $430 million per year in operating costs, aligning with Trump’s ongoing efforts to cut government spending.
Some of the high-profile buildings up for sale include the headquarters of major federal agencies, such as the Departments of Justice, Agriculture, and Veterans Affairs, primarily located in Washington, D.C.
Other notable properties include the Nancy Building in San Francisco and the Dick Cheney Federal Building in Wyoming. The GSA has even suggested selling its own headquarters as part of the cost-cutting initiative.
By selling off unnecessary properties, the administration aims to eliminate bureaucratic excess and create a leaner, more cost-effective federal government.
