Brush fires erupt on Long Island East End have caused major disruptions, shutting down a key route to the Hamptons and producing a massive smoke cloud visible from miles away.
The fires have prompted a swift response from multiple fire departments, as crews work to contain the blaze in what officials are calling a “large-scale coordinated countywide effort.”

According to Southampton emergency management, the fires are burning near Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton and within the Pine Barrens, a region known for its dense vegetation that can fuel wildfires.
Firefighters from several departments have been deployed to battle the flames, and authorities are urging residents to stay away from the affected areas for their safety.
Governor Kathy Hochul addressed the situation in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, assuring the public that state officials are working closely with local responders. “We are in close communication with local partners on Long Island to coordinate assistance and make sure they have the resources they need to protect their communities,” she wrote.
In response to the fires, authorities have closed eastbound Sunrise Highway at Exit 58, and police are asking drivers to avoid the area.
