Natural tyrants often manipulate language to invert the plain meaning of their words.
For example, listen to how casually members of the so-called “party of democracy” discuss disregarding the will of voters.
In a remarkable 97-second clip posted on the social media platform X on Thursday, the hosts of ABC’s “The View,” including co-host Whoopi Goldberg, reacted strongly when Republican Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire pointed out that Democratic Party “elites” had positioned Vice President Kamala Harris as their presumptive 2024 presidential nominee without voter input.
Even seasoned viewers of this show will need to see the clip to believe it.
Goldberg focused on the process by which Democratic elites elevated Harris. While Sununu did not use the word “elites” in this clip, Goldberg interpreted his comments that way, and she was clearly displeased.
Joy Behar and establishment Republican Alyssa Farah Griffin, two of Goldberg’s co-hosts, went further by endorsing the idea of elites selecting a party nominee, showcasing their version of “democracy.”
The first part of the clip features an exchange between Sununu and Goldberg over the Democrats’ covert elevation of Harris. Sununu spent the initial 15 seconds describing this secretive operation. Goldberg, however, insisted that all potential challengers to Harris had “decided she was the best choice.”
“But who decided?” Sununu asked.
“The delegates! The delegates!” the panel responded, overlooking that Harris did not earn those delegates in a primary election and that the delegates have not yet voted.
The discussion then descended into actual authoritarian madness.
“Let me flip it if I could,” Sununu said. “What if I said, ‘You know what, Trump, you’re losing in the polls now, and we have another candidate.’ And the head of the Republican National Committee and myself and a bunch of others say, ‘We’re just going to install Nikki Haley now because the polls –’”
Griffin interrupted, saying, “I wish we had a party that could operate that way,” making a joke that hinted at her authoritarian leanings.
Sununu, who has endorsed former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, did not take Griffin’s bait and maintained that such a scenario “would be awful for America.”
“Why?” Behar asked, incredulously.
“Because the voters have to decide,” Sununu replied.
“It would be two women against each other,” Behar said, as if that justified party elites overruling voters.
This interaction highlights the difference between Republicans — even establishment ones like Sununu — and the proponents of the so-called “party of democracy.”
Goldberg then demanded, “Stop calling them ‘elites,’” reflecting her discomfort with the term, even though Sununu had not used it.
“No, no. Insiders,” Sununu replied. “Yeah, big difference.”
In summary, the hosts of “The View” struggled to understand why having elites choose candidates is problematic for democracy. Goldberg objected to the term “elites,” while Griffin and Behar openly supported the idea. This exchange reveals the true authoritarian tendencies behind their rhetoric, showing how words can be manipulated to mean the opposite of their plain meaning.
