According to a recent Gallup survey, 7.6% of adults now identify as LGBTQ+, reflecting an increasing trend among younger generations in the U.S. The survey found that 7.6% of adults identify as LGBTQ+, up from 5.6% four years ago and 3.5% in 2012, the first year Gallup included questions on sexual orientation and transgender identification in their polls.
The 2023 Gallup telephone survey, whose results were released in March 2024, included over 12,000 American adults aged 18 and older. It showed that 85.6% of Americans identify as straight or heterosexual, while 7.6% fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or something else.
Among the LGBTQ+ population, bisexual adults constitute the largest segment at 4.4%, representing 57.3% of all LGBTQ+ adults. About 11.8% of LGBTQ+ adults identify as transgender, making up nearly 1% of the total U.S. adult population.
The data also reveals a generational trend: each successive generation is approximately twice as likely to identify as LGBTQ+ compared to the previous one. In 2023, over one in five adults in Gen Z (aged 18 to 26) and one in ten Millennials (aged 27-42) identified as LGBTQ+.
Additionally, the survey noted that LGBTQ+ identification is more prevalent among women, with 8.5% of women identifying as LGBTQ+ compared to 4.7% of men in the U.S. adult population. The nonbinary population constitutes about 1% of all U.S. adults.
