A report from Mark Halperin on X has claimed that President Joe Biden has agreed to withdraw from the presidential race, endorsing an open convention, and will not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. Halperin, who discussed his assertions on Newsmax, cited unnamed sources indicating that Biden’s withdrawal could be announced as early as Sunday. This follows intense public and private pressure on the president and continuous reports that he is trailing in the polls.
After Halperin’s report, Biden camp spokesperson TJ Ducklo told Fox News Digital’s Brooke Singman that the report is “entirely inaccurate.” Singman also reported that another aide said, “The President is more committed than ever to winning this election.”
“According to my sources, President Biden has agreed to step down as the Democratic nominee. It will happen as early as this weekend,” Halperin added.
“BREAKING NEWS,” Halperin posted. “Multiple sources outline the apparent state of play on Biden at this time: * Plans to announce withdrawal from nomination as early as this weekend, with Sunday most likely * Jon Meacham polishing up remarks * Biden will NOT resign the presidency * Biden will NOT endorse Harris * Open convention with Harris and about 3 others * Super delegates will not be allowed to vote on 1st ballot * Harris is vetting at least four possible running mates, including Andy Beshear and possibly Shapiro.”
Halperin further stated that he would continue to discuss these revelations, including “1. What Nancy Pelosi wants to have happen when and if Joe Biden gives up the nomination. 2. Why people shouldn’t be so sure that Kamala Harris wants the presidential nomination if Biden steps aside. 3. What to expect from Donald Trump’s acceptance speech and from Team Trump in the days ahead.”
Pressure has been building within the Democratic Party for Biden to step out of the presidential race. Top Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and former President Barack Obama, have all reportedly urged the president to drop out and allow a new candidate to take his place. Biden’s team has been reaching out to donors and politicians to assure them that he is fit to serve, yet many remain unconvinced after the debate against Donald Trump on June 27.
In an interview with BET on Wednesday, Biden said he would step out of the race if a medical condition forced him to step down. He was then diagnosed with Covid and canceled all of his remaining campaign events in Nevada.
