Last Wednesday, Wray had suggested that the injury Trump sustained at the Butler rally might have been caused by shrapnel rather than a bullet. “With respect to former President Trump, there’s some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear,” Wray said during his Congressional testimony. “I don’t know right now whether that bullet, in addition to causing the grazing, could have landed somewhere else.”
President Trump responded to Wray’s comments with a post on Truth Social, criticizing the FBI Director’s uncertainty and accusing him of being more focused on political targets than national security. “No, it was, unfortunately, a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard. There was no glass, there was no shrapnel. The hospital called it a ‘bullet wound to the ear,’ and that is what it was,” Trump asserted.
On Tuesday, during the Senate hearing, Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) sought to clarify the issue once and for all. He asked Deputy Director Abbate directly if there was any doubt within the FBI that President Trump was shot by a bullet.
“Is there any doubt in your mind or in the collective mind of the FBI that President Trump was shot in the ear by a bullet fired by the assassin?” Kennedy inquired.
“There is absolutely no doubt in the FBI’s mind,” Abbate responded unequivocally. “There never had been.”
Kennedy continued with a series of rhetorical questions to emphasize the point, humorously asking if the injury could have been caused by a space laser, murder hornet, or Sasquatch. Each time, Abbate firmly denied the outlandish suggestions, confirming that it was indeed a bullet.
Senator Kennedy concluded, “Glad we cleared that up.”
The exchange between Kennedy and Abbate was widely shared on social media, reinforcing the FBI’s stance that Trump was shot by a bullet, not shrapnel or any other bizarre cause.
