Lifelong Democrat George Clooney has turned on President Joe Biden, urging him to step aside from the 2024 race due to his poor debate performance and growing concerns about his ability to serve another term.
In a scathing op-ed for the New York Times, the Hollywood star, who has previously hosted fundraisers for Biden, argued that the president can’t win the “battle against time.” Clooney criticized Democratic leaders for ignoring signs of Biden’s declining health and for defending his lackluster debate against Donald Trump.
Clooney expressed frustration with Democratic voters having to hold their breath whenever Biden appears in public. He is one of many Democrats and Biden allies who have recently called for the president to step down following his confusing and rambling CNN appearance. Despite his efforts to support Biden, Clooney’s comments represent a significant blow to Biden’s campaign.
In his op-ed, Clooney praised Biden for his past accomplishments but emphasized that age is an insurmountable challenge. “Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024,” Clooney wrote, but he acknowledged that Biden’s recent performances don’t inspire confidence.
Clooney and Biden share a long history, dating back to Biden’s days as chairman of the Senate Foreign Services Committee. Clooney has been a significant supporter, raising millions for Democratic candidates, and his withdrawal of support could have financial repercussions for Biden’s campaign.
Hollywood donors were reportedly furious with Biden’s performance, feeling misled about his health. Clooney emphasized that defeating Donald Trump should be the priority, rather than keeping Biden on the ticket.
Clooney also revealed tension between him and Biden, particularly after Biden criticized an attempt by Clooney’s wife, Amal, to seek the arrest of Israel’s Prime Minister for war crimes. Despite these tensions, Clooney hosted a significant fundraiser for Biden last month, which raised $30 million but was marred by questions about Biden’s health after a video showed Obama guiding Biden off stage.
The op-ed has already prompted reactions from other prominent Democrats, with Michael Douglas expressing concern and agreeing with Clooney’s points. Biden continues to face challenges rallying support within the Democratic Party, with some members openly questioning his decision to remain in the race.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi has hinted at the need for Biden to make a decision soon, as time is running short. Clooney suggested the Democratic National Convention as the place to select a new nominee, proposing a range of potential candidates like Kamala Harris, Gretchen Whitmer, and Gavin Newsom.
Despite the criticism, Biden has affirmed his commitment to the race, reaching out to Democratic lawmakers and supporters to solidify his position. However, the growing concerns from within his party highlight the difficult path ahead for his re-election campaign.
