Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani, one of the most influential designers of the modern era, has died at the age of 91, his company announced on Thursday.
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the fashion house said in a statement confirming the news.
Armani had been in fragile health for some time and was forced to miss his brand’s shows during Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June. It was the first time in his career that he had been absent from one of his own catwalk presentations — a sign that the fashion world’s “King Giorgio,” as he was affectionately known, was slowing down after decades of tireless work.
Born in Piacenza, Italy, Armani rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated names in global fashion. His sleek, understated style came to define modern Italian elegance, and his designs reshaped how men and women dressed in the latter half of the 20th century.
Beyond artistry, Armani proved himself an astute businessman, personally guiding the Armani Group into a powerhouse that generated roughly €2.3 billion ($2.7 billion) annually.
Known for his perfectionism, Armani famously involved himself in every aspect of his company — from advertising campaigns to the fine details of runway shows. He was even known to adjust models’ hair before they stepped onto the catwalk, a testament to his exacting standards.
The Armani Group said that a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan this weekend for the public to pay their respects, with a private funeral to follow at a later date.
