India says it attacked nine sites in Pakistan, Pakistani Kashmir

India announced on Wednesday that its military conducted targeted strikes on nine sites located in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, claiming these areas were being used to plan attacks against Indian interests.

Pakistan has confirmed casualties, reporting at least three people killed and 12 injured based on early assessments.

The strikes come at a time of heightened hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, following the killing of 26 Hindu pilgrims in Indian-administered Kashmir last month.

India blamed Pakistan-based militants for the attack and pledged retaliation. Pakistan, however, denied involvement and accused India of preparing for military action under false pretenses.

Pakistan military spokesperson Ahmed Sharif, says the military has shot down at least two Indian jets and a drone according to BBC.

According to an official statement from the Indian government, the operation—named Operation Sindoor—was aimed at what India described as “terrorist infrastructure” operating from within Pakistani territory and areas of Jammu and Kashmir under Pakistan’s control.

“In a calibrated and restrained manner, the Indian armed forces carried out strikes against locations used to plan and direct terrorist activity against India,” the statement read. “We have avoided targeting any Pakistani military installations. This operation was both precise and non-escalatory.”

While India did not disclose whether the strikes were carried out by missiles, drones, or air raids, Pakistan confirmed that missile attacks were launched in three locations.

A spokesperson for the Pakistani military, speaking to Geo News, said five sites were impacted, including two mosques. He stated that a response from Pakistan’s military was underway but provided no further details.

Local witnesses in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, reported a widespread power outage following the explosions. In Indian Kashmir, residents and a local police official described hearing heavy artillery fire and the presence of fighter jets overhead during the operation.

Pakistan has strongly denied any involvement in the attack on Hindu pilgrims and contends that it had intelligence suggesting India was planning cross-border military action. Islamabad maintains that India’s actions risk further destabilizing the region and escalating conflict between the two nations.

In the wake of the Indian operation, the Indian Army posted a message on social media platform X, declaring, “Justice is served.”

The situation remains tense, and both countries are now on high alert as the international community watches for any signs of further escalation.
