11 inmates escape from New Orleans jail, some facing murder charges

A manhunt is underway in New Orleans after 11 adult male inmates escape from a Orleans Justice Center jail on Friday morning. All escapees are considered armed and dangerous, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The inmates were discovered missing during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson announced in a press briefing. The brazen escape has prompted immediate concern from law enforcement and the public alike.

“This is a very serious and completely unacceptable breach of security,” Sheriff Hutson stated. “We are launching a full-scale investigation to determine exactly how this occurred, including a comprehensive review of staff actions, facility procedures, and physical security systems.”

Sheriff Hutson also issued a clear warning: anyone found to have assisted in the escape—either from inside the jail or on the outside—will face legal consequences.

The Orleans Justice Center, located less than three miles from the city’s French Quarter, is dangerously close to one of New Orleans’ most frequented tourist destinations. Officials are urging residents and visitors alike to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

The sheriff’s office is working closely with local police, Louisiana state authorities, and federal law enforcement agencies in what is being described as a “full-scale search operation.”

The public is urged to avoid approaching any of the escapees if seen and instead contact law enforcement immediately.
