The Senate confirmed Kash Patel as the next Director of the FBI in a narrow 51-49 vote on Thursday afternoon, following intense debate and political opposition.
Earlier in the day, the Senate successfully broke the filibuster on Patel’s nomination with a 51-47 vote, clearing the way for his confirmation.
Patel, known for his role in exposing the Russiagate hoax while serving as a top aide to former House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, has faced fierce opposition from Democrats and mainstream media figures.
Ahead of the vote, a group of Senate Democrats staged a protest outside FBI headquarters, expressing their strong disapproval of Patel’s nomination. The Senate Judiciary Democrats posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“We’re at FBI Headquarters right now to say… Kash Patel belongs nowhere NEAR the FBI Headquarters.”

While most Republicans backed Patel, Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME) broke ranks and voted against his confirmation. However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has opposed several of Trump’s previous cabinet picks, voted in favor of Patel.
Shortly after his confirmation, Patel released a statement outlining his commitment to restoring trust in the FBI and eliminating political bias within the agency:
“I am honored to be confirmed as the ninth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Thank you to President Trump and Attorney General Bondi for your unwavering confidence and support.
The FBI has a storied legacy—from the ‘G-Men’ to safeguarding our nation in the wake of 9/11. The American people deserve an FBI that is transparent, accountable, and committed to justice. The politicization of our justice system has eroded public trust—but that ends today.
My mission as Director is clear: let good cops be cops—and rebuild trust in the FBI. Working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Bureau and our partners, we will rebuild an FBI the American people can be proud of.
And to those who seek to harm Americans—consider this your warning. We will hunt you down in every corner of this planet.
Mission First. America Always. Let’s get to work.”
Patel’s confirmation marks a significant shift in the leadership of the FBI, as he prepares to take on what he describes as a mission to depoliticize the Bureau and restore public confidence in federal law enforcement.
