Mass shooting in Orlando leaves 2 dead and 6 wounded by teen, during Halloween event—Suspect arrested

A horrific Halloween mass shooting in downtown Orlando early Friday morning left two people dead and six others wounded, sending shockwaves through a city known for its vibrant nightlife.

The tragic incident unfolded outside The Block, a popular nightlife district with seven clubs, where hundreds had gathered for a Halloween costume contest with cash prizes.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith provided details in a press conference, explaining that officers responded to gunfire at the intersection of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue at approximately 1:07 a.m.

Just minutes later, a second burst of gunfire erupted one block north at Washington Street and Orange Avenue, further intensifying the chaos.

Six victims, between the ages of 19 and 31, were transported to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. Tragically, two others lost their lives in the melee.

Police identified the shooter as 17-year-old Jalen Dwayne Edgar.

According to authorities, Edgar, who was previously arrested for grand theft in 2023, arrived in downtown Orlando armed with a handgun, bypassing officers stationed throughout the area.

Officials believe he acted alone, and his actions were described as calculated.

During the press conference, Smith presented chilling footage from the night, showing Edgar casually walking with a group before he drew a gun and opened fire on an unsuspecting victim.

The initial shots sparked panic, with hundreds of partygoers fleeing in terror. In a second video, Edgar can be seen firing at another crowded area near a police cruiser.

Officers on the scene immediately moved to contain the shooter; one officer tackled Edgar to the ground, swiftly immobilizing him as others arrived to help.

“These officers didn’t hesitate, and I’m incredibly proud of their swift response,” Smith said. “When shots were fired, they didn’t retreat with the crowd—they engaged, they acted, and they kept everyone else safe.”

Chief Smith highlighted the size of the Halloween celebrations, estimating between 50,000 and 100,000 attendees.

“Halloween and the weekend following are some of our busiest nights, and this year was no different,” he added.

While the police are still investigating the shooter’s motive, Smith expressed frustration with the senseless violence. “It’s tragic when someone harbors resentment or anger and acts out in such a brutal, indiscriminate manner.

This suspect appeared intent on causing as much harm as possible.”

Orlando’s State Attorney Andrew Bain confirmed Edgar would be charged as an adult, citing “several aggravating factors,” including the mass scale of the crime and the brazen nature of Edgar’s actions in a public setting filled with civilians.

“Given the number of victims and the deliberate nature of the attack, it’s clear this case calls for adult charges,” Bain stated.

The mass shooting has shocked the Orlando community, with many expressing grief over the senseless loss of life on a night meant for celebration.

This incident follows a recent trend of heightened concerns over public safety during large gatherings, and city officials have promised a thorough investigation to understand the factors that led to the tragedy.
