Politico has reported that two prominent Democratic figures are allegedly working behind the scenes to encourage President Biden to step aside from his reelection bid.
Sources indicate that former President Barack Obama was in touch with Hollywood star and Democratic donor George Clooney before Clooney published a critical op-ed in The New York Times, urging Biden to withdraw from the race.
While Obama did not explicitly endorse Clooney’s actions, he did not oppose them either, according to the outlet.
Clooney made headlines on Wednesday by stating that while Biden had previously saved democracy, he should now do so again by stepping down. Describing himself as a “lifelong Democrat” and a key fundraiser, Clooney argued that Biden was no longer the same leader he was in 2020 and should leave the race as he cannot win the “fight against time.”
Following the op-ed, former President Donald Trump criticized Clooney, who had publicly supported Biden just a week earlier.
“So now fake movie actor George Clooney, who never came close to making a great movie, is getting into the act,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “He’s turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are.”
Trump also dismissed Clooney’s claim that Biden had “saved our Democracy,” arguing instead that Biden had brought it to its knees and suggesting that Clooney should return to television and stay out of politics.
Politico also noted that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been involved in strategic efforts. She has reportedly advised Democrats in swing districts to prioritize their reelections, even if it means asking Biden to step down as the presumptive nominee. Pelosi has encouraged members to hold off on public statements until after this week’s NATO Summit, citing national security concerns.
“Either tell somebody privately — but you don’t have to put that out on the table until we see how we go this week,” she advised on Wednesday.
Some lawmakers are reportedly preparing statements calling for Biden’s withdrawal, which they plan to release once foreign leaders depart.
Pelosi herself made news on Wednesday for a heated exchange with ABC Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott. When asked about her stance on Biden’s reelection bid, Pelosi responded curtly, “I’m not having this conversation with you.” As Scott persisted, Pelosi’s frustration grew, culminating in her snapping, “Am I speaking English to you?” Pelosi eventually affirmed her belief in Biden’s ability to secure victory in November.
