In an interview with Fox News’ Brian Llenas in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, 2024 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that he would vote against Florida’s Amendment 4, which seeks to allow abortions in the state beyond six weeks.
“I think six weeks is too short. You need more time than six weeks. I’ve disagreed with that from the start, right from the early primaries when I first heard about it,” Trump stated.
He also criticized the Democratic position on abortion, saying, “The Democrats are radical because allowing abortions up to nine months is just ridiculous. In some states like Minnesota, they allow you to execute a baby after birth. That’s unacceptable.”
“For those reasons, I’ll be voting no,” Trump concluded.
The ballot initiative, proposed by Floridians Protecting Freedom (FPF), reads: “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider. This amendment does not change the Legislature’s constitutional authority to require notification to a parent or guardian before a minor has an abortion.”
FPF describes itself as “a statewide campaign of allied organizations and concerned citizens working together to limit government interference with abortion.” The group argues that “all Floridians deserve the freedom to make personal medical decisions, free of government intrusion.” The amendment they propose, the “Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion,” aims to prevent politicians from creating laws that restrict or delay access to abortion.
