Disgraced ‘Reliable Sources’ reporter OUT at CNN to start subscription newsletter

The reporter behind CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” Oliver Darcy, has departed the network amid its ongoing restructuring efforts. Darcy, who also served as a senior reporter at CNN, is now focusing on launching his own venture: a newsletter called “Status.” He took over “Reliable Sources” after former host Brian Stelter left the network.

Status” is described as “the new, definitive nightly briefing that informs readers about what is really happening in the corridors of media power,” according to a statement on the website. The launch of this newsletter coincides with significant financial challenges for CNN’s parent company, Warner Brothers, which recently reported a $10 billion net loss for the second quarter, missing key benchmark estimates as reported by the New York Post.

In response to these financial setbacks, CNN has announced plans for job cuts and a broader restructuring. CNN CEO Mark Thompson praised Darcy, saying, “Oliver has established himself as a tough but scrupulously fair leading voice in media reporting and commentary – never afraid to call it as he sees it. He has been a great shepherd of CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter, and we wish him every success in his new entrepreneurial adventure,” according to Mediaite.

Darcy, discussing his new newsletter, said, “There will be no sugarcoating, no pulling punches, no sparing sensitive egos — just the unvarnished truth about the companies and individuals who shape our world.”

The newsletter will focus on major media outlets such as “The New York Times, CNN, and Fox News,” and will also cover influential figures in the industry, including media moguls, tech giants, and other power players. Darcy’s venture also offers an elite membership option for $595 per year, which includes perks like private Zoom calls.
