One of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ defense attorneys, Anthony Ricco, has filed a motion to withdraw from the embattled music mogul’s high-profile criminal sex-trafficking case, court records show.
Ricco submitted his request on Thursday in Manhattan federal court, stating, “Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs.” He urged the judge to grant his withdrawal, though the decision will not be finalized until a judge officially approves it.
Ricco did not provide specific reasons for stepping down but mentioned that his decision followed discussions with Combs’ lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo. In his affidavit, Ricco emphasized that he kept his explanation brief to avoid revealing any information protected by attorney-client privilege.
However, he assured the court that his departure would not impact the trial, which is scheduled to begin on May 5, as Combs still has five other attorneys representing him.
The 54-year-old rapper and producer has pleaded not guilty to charges alleging he forced women into drug-fueled sex acts. He was arrested in September and has remained in custody without bail.
If convicted on the most serious charge, Combs faces a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison.
Beyond the criminal case, he is also facing at least 40 civil lawsuits from individuals—both men and women—accusing him of drugging, sexually assaulting, or raping them.
Despite the mounting legal battles, Combs has denied all allegations.
Combs’ remaining attorneys have not issued any statements regarding Ricco’s departure. Ricco also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
