Rep. Shri Thanedar introduces articles of impeachment against Trump

Shri Thanedar impeachment Trump

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) introduced seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Monday, marking the first formal Democratic attempt this year to oust the president or a member of his administration — although it’s unlikely to be the last.

The move comes as the Democratic Party’s most outspoken critics of Trump sharpen their strategies. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), recently censured for disrupting Trump’s address to Congress, has also indicated plans to introduce his own impeachment articles.

Meanwhile, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has reportedly floated the idea of impeaching top administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, over the burgeoning “Signalgate” scandal.

The Latest Push

In a statement, Shri Thanedar — who faced the announcement of a second primary challenger earlier Monday — called for impeachment against Trump and said he is “unfit to serve as President and [a] clear and present danger to our nation’s Constitution and our democracy.”

“We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act,” he said.

The articles of impeachment leveled against Trump allege obstruction of justice, abuse of power, bribery, corruption, and usurpation of authority. Thanedar’s accusations focus heavily on Trump’s efforts to consolidate executive power and on issues surrounding his personal financial dealings.

Political Reality

Despite the dramatic announcement, the effort has little chance of succeeding. With Republicans firmly in control of both the House and the Senate, impeachment proceedings are almost guaranteed to stall.

While Thanedar could technically force a floor vote on impeachment, he has not indicated whether he plans to do so.

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
