ABC News has officially fired longtime correspondent Terry Moran after a controversial post on social media targeting former Trump adviser Stephen Miller.
The decision, announced Tuesday, follows Moran’s suspension over the weekend after his online comments were deemed a violation of network policy.
In the now-deleted post, Moran referred to Miller as a “world class hater,” sparking immediate backlash both within ABC and across social media. The statement, which was viewed as a politically charged attack, reportedly violated the network’s standards of journalistic conduct.

“We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran, and based on his recent post – which was a clear violation of ABC News policies – we have made the decision not to renew,” an ABC spokesperson told The New York Post. “At ABC News, we hold all of our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness, and professionalism, and we remain committed to delivering straightforward, trusted journalism.”
Moran, who has been a familiar face at ABC News for decades and served in various high-profile roles including as a White House correspondent and co-anchor of Nightline, had developed a reputation for sharp political commentary.
However, his recent outburst appears to have crossed a line for the network, particularly as Disney, ABC’s parent company, has faced increased scrutiny over perceived political bias in its media properties.
The social media post was reportedly published just hours before Moran’s suspension on Sunday. According to sources inside ABC News, newsroom leadership moved quickly to address the situation, expressing concern that Moran’s comments could damage the outlet’s credibility at a time when trust in media remains fragile.
Insiders told The Post that there was growing internal pressure for Terry Moran to be fired from ABC after the controversial post about Miller, with several staff members voicing frustration that one of the network’s most senior correspondents would so openly violate policies designed to preserve neutrality. One staffer reportedly said the comment “undermines the very standards we work to uphold every day.”
Stephen Miller, the target of Moran’s attack, served as a senior policy adviser to President Donald Trump and was known for his influence over the administration’s hardline immigration agenda.
Miller has long been a controversial figure, frequently drawing ire from critics on the left, but ABC News emphasized that its policies apply regardless of who the subject may be.
The firing comes at a time when mainstream news organizations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate impartiality, particularly when covering politically divisive topics. ABC News has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clear distinction between opinion and reporting—a line executives say Moran blurred.
This isn’t the first time a high-profile journalist has faced disciplinary action over social media activity. In recent years, multiple news outlets have tightened their social media guidelines in response to growing concerns about the impact of personal commentary on public trust in journalism.
ABC News has yet to announce who will replace Moran or whether his former role will be restructured. The network says it will continue to uphold the values of fairness and professionalism across all platforms.
This is a developing story. More updates are expected.
