A Texas delegate attending the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago was robbed at gunpoint while walking in downtown Chicago early Wednesday morning, according to a report by CWBChicago.
The delegate, who remains unidentified, was walking with a friend around 2 a.m. along the 100 block of West Randolph Street, near the Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel, when a black Range Rover pulled up. A masked man emerged from the vehicle, brandishing a gun, and reportedly stole the 25-year-old delegate’s wallet and room key.
Afterward, the assailant allegedly crossed the street and robbed two more victims—a 37-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incidents.
The Chicago Police Department (CPD) believes that the robberies were carried out by a duo suspected of committing other burglaries in the same area around the same time. The suspects are also believed to have robbed three people outside the Emily Hotel in Chicago, with a similar vehicle being spotted at the scene.
Earlier, on Monday morning, a similar robbery was reported in the 200 block of West 23rd Place. Police describe the suspects as two Black males, between 5’7″ and 5’9″, wearing black clothing and ski masks.
Chicago, known for its high crime rates, including frequent shootings and gang-related violence, has seen increased security concerns during the convention. Protests, primarily by anti-Israel NGOs, have also taken place, while Jewish groups were reportedly barred from marching in the city. Due to security concerns, House Democrats were advised to book hotels under assumed names.
