Trump orders 100% tariff on foreign-produced films, calls it ‘national security issue’

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that his administration will impose a 100% tariff on all films produced outside the United States, citing the sharp decline of the domestic movie industry and its potential consequences for national security.

“The movie industry in America is dying a very fast death,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “Other countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States.”

Trump warned that the weakening of Hollywood and other U.S. film centers is part of a broader global effort to undermine American cultural and economic influence. “This is a concerted effort by other nations and, therefore, a national security threat,” he stated.

He said he has directed the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to begin the immediate process of enforcing a 100% tariff on any and all films made outside the country.

Trump also raised concerns about foreign films being used for propaganda and ideological messaging, saying that bringing film production back to the U.S. is essential. “We want movies made in America, again!” he wrote.

It remains unclear when the tariff policy would be implemented or how it would affect international studios and U.S. distributors of foreign films.
