Donald Trump has pledged to sign legislation establishing a Space National Guard if he is elected president in November, stating that it would serve as the combat reserves for the U.S. Space Force, which he created during his first term.
Speaking at the National Guard Association of the United States’ 146th General Conference in Detroit, Michigan, the GOP nominee emphasized his commitment to advancing the nation’s defense capabilities in space. He promised to continue the work he began with the creation of Space Force by supporting the establishment of a Space National Guard.
“One of my proudest achievements of my first term was creating Space Force, the first new branch of the armed forces in over 70 years—that’s a big deal,” Trump told the audience. “Now that Space Force is up and running, I agree with your leadership that the time has come to create a Space National Guard as the primary combat reserve of the U.S. Space Force.”
Trump further assured attendees that, if re-elected, he would sign “historic legislation” to bring the Space National Guard into existence. He mentioned that he had discussed the idea with Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who was enthusiastic about the proposal.
Since its inception in late 2019, Space Force has played a crucial role in national security, particularly as technology increasingly relies on satellites and other space-based systems. Space Force’s mission is to protect the U.S.’s ability to operate freely in space, ensuring that it remains secure, stable, and accessible for military operations and future innovations.
