As discussions continue about scheduling a vice-presidential debate between Donald Trump’s pick, JD Vance, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Trump campaign has issued a statement expressing uncertainty about scheduling the event because “we don’t know” who the Democratic nominee for vice president will be.
The statement highlighted the difficulty in arranging a debate between Vance and VP Harris due to the possibility that Joe Biden may not be the Democratic nominee for president. It implied that Harris might become the presidential nominee following the Democratic Party’s convention.
“We don’t know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can’t lock in a date before their convention. To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer, or whoever Kamala Harris picks as her running mate,” said Brian Hughes, Trump Campaign Senior Advisor.
On Wednesday, VP Harris accepted an invitation from CBS News to participate in a debate with Vance in August. Vance also emphasized in an interview on Tuesday the importance of the public seeing him debate Harris.
The Trump campaign’s comments come amid widespread speculation that Biden may not be the Democratic nominee for president by the time of the Democratic National Convention. While Biden has previously stated that he will not withdraw from the race, he admitted in an interview on Wednesday that he would consider dropping out if diagnosed with a “medical condition” by his doctors.
After President Biden’s statement about dropping out, he was tested positive for COVID. And left the Nevada event to go to Delaware in his beach house in self-isolation.
