Donald Trump is leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 12 points on the issue of handling the economy, according to a recent Wall Street Journal poll. This comes amidst recent global stock market plunges and an increase in US unemployment to 4.3 percent.
The poll, conducted from July 23-25 with 1,000 registered voters nationwide, asked respondents, “Between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, who in your opinion is best able to handle the economy?” Trump was favored by 52 percent of those polled, while 40 percent believed Harris would do a better job.
Trump also holds a lead over Harris on foreign relations, with a 49 to 45 percent advantage. On the topic of crime, Trump leads with 48 percent compared to Harris’ 43 percent. Regarding immigration and border control, 53 percent of registered voters trust Trump, compared to 40 percent for Harris.
Overall, the poll shows Trump leading Harris by a narrow margin of 49 to 47 points, within the margin of error of 3.1 points. The poll was conducted before the significant market fluctuations during the first weekend of August, which could potentially influence future polling in Trump’s favor, given that he is not currently in office.
Additionally, a recent Gallup poll indicates that voters’ confidence in the economy has been low over the past year, with confidence in the US economy underwater by 35 points as of July 2024.
