Following the filing of a superseding indictment by special counsel Jack Smith in the January 6 case, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized the new charges, calling for their immediate dismissal.
Trump argued that the new indictment, like the original, is flawed and should be thrown out. He accused Smith, whom he called an “illegally appointed” special counsel, of trying to revive a failed investigation in a desperate attempt to “interfere with the election” and distract from issues he attributes to the Biden-Harris administration, such as border security, inflation, and the threat of global conflict.
Trump claimed the timing of the indictment, following what he described as a “Supreme Court Victory on Immunity,” was an attack on democracy. He described the filing as “an unprecedented abuse of the Criminal Justice System” and accused the Department of Justice under the Biden-Harris administration of obstructing the election.
Trump also referenced recent statements by Mark Zuckerberg about the suppression of information during the 2020 election, which he claims further proves that the election was “manipulated and rigged.” He accused Vice President Kamala Harris of pushing for the indictment instead of calling for its dismissal and argued that such actions are characteristic of “Third World Countries and Banana Republics.”
Trump reiterated that the case should be dismissed based on presidential immunity, as ruled by the Supreme Court. He expressed confidence that the American people would see through what he described as “corrupt lawsuits” and would respond by giving him a decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election.
Finally, Trump condemned what he called the “weaponization” of the legal system by local district attorneys and attorneys general to target political opponents, predicting that all such efforts would fail and that he would ultimately triumph in the upcoming election.
