The UK government is now extending its efforts to suppress free speech beyond its borders, threatening the international community over online posts. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a warning to British citizens, stating that they could face arrest for “participating in violence online.”
Recently, a man in Hampshire, England, was arrested for “malicious communications” after posting a social media comment mocking the transgender flag.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley made it clear in a statement to reporters that the law will be enforced rigorously, regardless of whether offenses are committed within the UK or from abroad. “We will throw the full force of the law at people,” Rowley said. “And whether you’re in this country committing crimes on the streets or committing crimes from further afield online, we will come after you.”
When questioned about how the police plan to deal with “keyboard warriors” based in other countries, Rowley responded, “Being a keyboard warrior does not make you safe from the law.” He elaborated that offenses such as incitement, stirring up racial hatred, and various terrorist-related offenses could apply to those who provoke hatred and violence online.
Rowley emphasized that the UK police will pursue individuals who incite violence and hatred online with the same determination as they do those causing disturbances on the streets.
There was even a suggestion that high-profile figures, including Elon Musk, might not be immune from such actions.
