US total Olympic gold medal count, tied with China

The Paris Olympic Games have concluded, with the United States team once again delivering an outstanding performance. They secured a total of 126 medals, surpassing all other nations. The U.S. tied with China for the most gold medals, each achieving 40, according to The Washington Post.

Among the U.S. Olympians, swimmers Regan Smith and Torri Huske stood out, each earning five medals. Star gymnast Simone Biles, along with swimmers Katie Ledecky, Kate Douglass, and Gretchen Walsh, each brought home four medals.

California athletes led the medal count among U.S. states, contributing 50 medals. Texas followed with 28 medals, and Florida ranked third with 20 medals.

Despite these achievements, the Olympics faced several controversies. The opening ceremony was heavily criticized by conservatives and religious groups. GOP nominee Donald Trump called it “a disgrace.” Additionally, star WNBA player Caitlin Clark was not selected for the basketball team, sparking discussions. Controversy also arose over the genders of two boxers in the women’s category, and LeBron James garnered media attention after an incident with a young fan.

The closing ceremonies featured a less contentious appearance by Tom Cruise. He was dramatically lowered into the Stade de France, where he was warmly greeted by athletes with high-fives. Cruise then exited the stadium on a motorcycle, heading to a waiting airplane. With Los Angeles set to host the next Olympics, many saw Cruise’s departure as a symbolic transition to the upcoming Games, as reported by USA Today.
