A prominent Republican senator is backing the idea of businessman and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy filling the Senate seat of Republican Vice-Presidential nominee JD Vance.
Senator Rick Scott expressed his support during an interview on The Ari Hoffman Show on Talk Radio 570 KVI, saying, “I think Vivek would be a great pick… He’s got a great message. He’s a great messenger, and so I think he would be a great U.S. Senator.”
Scott, who has served on the Senate Republican campaign committee, added, “He would hit the ground running.” After former President Donald Trump announced his choice of Vance as his running mate, speculation began about who might succeed Vance in representing Ohio in the Senate. Ramaswamy currently resides in Ohio.
Ramaswamy told Fox News on Tuesday at the Republican National Convention, “If I was asked to serve, I would consider it. Absolutely.”
He continued, “Running for president wasn’t something I thought I was going to be doing. In the moment that we’re in, I’m called to do what I think will allow me to have the maximum impact on saving the country. And if I was asked to serve, yes, I would strongly consider it out of my sense of obligation to the country.”
Vance was elected to the Senate in 2022 and isn’t up for re-election until 2028. However, if he and Trump are successful in November, Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine will be responsible for appointing a replacement.
When asked if he had spoken to DeWine about the possibility, Ramaswamy told Fox News, “I have not yet.”
He added that Vance will be leaving “very big shoes to fill, and it’s important that the right person actually take that mantle on.”
